The most common problem for clients that I train is they are addicted to carbohydrates. It’s really hard for me to understand the cravings of sugar and bread but apparently most of the general public is fighting these cravings on a daily basis. Other than the carbohydrates found in fruits and vegetables I am not a very big fan of carbohydrates. I would rather consume calories rich in protein but maybe that’s just me. Nothing sounds better than a lean piece of turkey or fish with some fresh locally grown vegetables.
So when is the best time to consume carbohydrates??
The best time to consume carbohydrates is right before and right after your workout. The reason for this is due to how the human energy systems work. Most carbohydrates contain a simple sugar, glucose that is metabolized very quickly by the body and is converted to ATP. This type of energy production is very important during your workout. To obtain optimum performance I suggest consuming your carbs for the day (pasta, bread, rice, oatmeal, etc.) to right before your workout. These calories from carbohydrates are going to be completely burned off during your workout, relieving the fear of gaining weight from carbohydrates. I also suggest replenishing the carbs you have burned off during your workout by consuming a protein shake combined with some fruit juice or fresh fruit. This will keep you from getting that “Brain Fog” that some people get when they are going from a carb rich diet to a more carbohydrate restricted plan.
With these simple changes in nutrient timing I have seen amazing body composition changes in a matter of days for my clients.
