Being in the fitness industry I try to always stay up on the new trends in fitness. Over the past 10 years I have seen of lot of interesting things come and go. This year I am predicting some major changes in the fitness industry. It will be fun to see how right I am. Here are some of my predictions for 2009.
1. Bootcamp and Group Style Training
I have never seen such a change in the fitness industry over the past three years. I have had more requests than ever for small group training sessions or even large bootcamp classes. With the economy struggling, group classes are becoming more and more popular and will continue to grow. There is a bootcamp for everything now.
2. 30 Minute Personal Training Sessions
Another great economical saver. This new trend is becoming more popular by the day. Five years ago 90% of my sessions were hour long personal training sessions. Now 80% of my clients are doing 1/2 hour sessions. This allows someone who would normally come once or twice a week to come 3x,4x,5x a week. It also gives you a lot more time in your day and helps with accountability.
3. Rehabilitation and Bodywork
With everyone being more active than ever our bodies begin to breakdown. As a Muscle Activation Therapist I have seen more clients with injuries as a result. Fitness enthusiasts are now understanding taking care of their bodies helps with recovery and helps keep from getting injured. As a result more people are utilizing Muscle Activation Therapists, Acupuncturist, Chiropractors, Massage Therapists, and other healing techniques.
4. Kettlebells
You have seen these goofy things. Some say it looks like a cannonball with a handle. More popular than ever, kettlebells have made there way into most gyms. There are even group classes strictly for kettlebells. You will see more in 2009.
5. Crossfit
Since the movie 300, Crossfit has exploded. Crossfit is a strength and conditioning fitness methodology. Its stated goal is to create "the quintessential athlete, equals parts gymnast, Olympic weightlifter, and sprinter". Crossfit is designed with a group like "cult" atmosphere. Crossfit participants perform a workout of the day or WOD. Classes are typically 10-20 participants in an hour long period all competing for the top time and strength in the particular workouts. This is intense!!
6. Triathlons, 1/2 Marathons, Full Marathons
More and more people are searching for something new to push themselves. What better way than doing something you have never attempted before.
7. Nutrition and Diets
I guarantee there will be a new diet out for 2009. Isn't it all about calories in vs. calories burned anyway :) ???
Happy 2009 Everyone!!
